What is Threadless and Threaded Jewelry?

For some folks, threadless & threaded jewelry can be a new concept compared to the “studs” or “butterfly back” earrings many are familiar with. While traditional earring styles can be a viable option to wear, they’re not necessarily comfortable or safe for long-term 24/7 wearing, especially for piercings that aren’t just in an earlobe.

Threadless jewelry operates with a press-fit mechanism (no having to screw or unscrew), secured in place with tension. Its key benefits are safety, versatility, comfort, and ease of changing up your look. Threadless jewelry is the current leading piercing industry-standard jewelry for many of the most common body piercings; earlobes, nostrils, helixes, conches, lips, etc. It offers a wide variety of gauge & length post options to accommodate nearly any piercing’s needs.

Threaded jewelry operates with a screw/unscrew mechanism - righty tighty, lefty loosey. While it has the same key benefits as threadless jewelry, it is a little bit less common for piercings such as nostrils & earlobes. The bigger the decorative end, the more we suggest it being threaded rather than threadless. Dainty jewelry is not going to have an issue with security in a threadless style, but really big pieces are going to need something thicker than a pin to offer more support & ensure it won’t be lost or damaged. Threaded jewelry most common in body piercings that are more prone to experiencing movement (such as navel or bridge piercings) which often need more security than threadless jewelry can provide. Our 16g Threaded ends are compatible only with 16g internally threaded posts & barbells. Our 14g/12g Threaded ends will be compatible on any 14g or 12g internally threaded posts & barbells. We only offer internal threading.

Why choose Threadless Jewelry?

  • So long as you purchase or already own a properly fitted post from a safe piercer near you, you’re going to have a high quality piece of jewelry that is comfortable and safe for 24/7 wear. Because threadless & threaded posts have a disc or bead backing, and are not one-size fits all like traditional studs, you won’t be left with jewelry that pokes you or sticks out.
  • Tension can be adjusted to be extremely tight & secure for piercings you don’t plan on changing anytime soon, or be set (still secure) but with a bit less tension for collectors that like to frequently swap between different ends.
  • You only need one post to wear a variety of decorative ends. For example, if a nostril piercing is the only piercing you have; you could own an endless amount of threadless end options that will all fit into the same singular post.
  • You can endlessly mix & match, move ends around on, or even easily add chains & charms to your current piercing collection! Not loving that emerald in your labret anymore? Try it out in your conch! So long as each piercing is fitted with a threadless post, all you have to do is swap the ends. Conch piercing still needs a little more something? Try attaching a chain!

How does it work?

  1. Insert pin 1/3 of the way into the post
  2. bend with gentle pressure to create slight "hockey stick" shape
  3. push past tension point to secure threadless end snugly in the post
  4. to remove, pull the threadless end and the post in opposite directions

Why choose Threaded Jewelry?

  • So long as you purchase or already own a properly fitted internally threaded post or barbell from a safe piercer near you, you’re going to have a high quality piece of jewelry that is comfortable and safe for 24/7 wear. Because threadless & threaded posts have a disc or bead backing, and are not one-size fits all like traditional studs, you won’t be left with jewelry that pokes you or sticks out.
  • Threaded jewelry is the best option for decorative pieces 6mm or larger. For larger pieces, thicker threads provide more security than a threadless pin.
  • It is suitable for a variety of body piercings not limited to the ears & face! Whether it’s a bridge, vertical lip, genital piercing, navel, surface piercing - there’s so many placements where this style of jewelry can be worn.
  • Just like threadless jewelry, you only need one post or one barbell to wear a variety of different decorative ends.

It is just as possible to move ends around or to add charms and chains to threaded jewelry as it is to do so with threadless jewelry!

How does it work?

  1. place threads into post and turn clockwise
  2. To remove, twist threaded end counterclockwise while holding the back disc of the post in place
